Fiji’s coronavirus restrictions in place countrywide will remain, despite the country being declared COVID-19 free, for the second time since the first case in March.
Minister for Health Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said the stringent measures, leadership, and professional networking in place have been effective in sustaining the country’s health system.
Fiji was first declared COVID-19 free in June when all of the initial 18 cases recovered. However, in July, the country recorded another case, its 19th and the first of the 14 border quarantine cases recorded between 6 July and September 8. Of the border quarantine cases, 12 involved Fijians repatriated from India, one from the United States of America and the 14th case was a local nurse who contracted the disease while treating patients in isolation.
