Young people are being encouraged to rethink their views on agriculture and farming, not as a burden, but as an opportunity to look past the challenges and see the potential for a sustainable livelihood it offers.
Speaking at the National Youth in Agriculture Symposium in Suva, Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna highlighted that wealth can be found all around Fiji through agriculture.
“In Fiji and around the world, we all face a common challenge: the aging of our farming population. Our recent 2024 agriculture production survey showed a decline in youth involvement in crop farming.”
“Many are drawn to overseas jobs, attracted by what seems like quick income, only to realise the real prize lies here at home: utilising our land, serving our communities, and raising our families side by side.”
The Agriculture Minister said it was also on the older generation to help the young realise the potential there is in the land and to help them with skills.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that younger Fijians are not only encouraged but also equipped with the skills, resources, and support networks they need to turn agriculture into a thriving business.”
With the theme “A Transformative Journey towards Sustainable Agri-Entrepreneurship”, the symposium was attended by young farmers right across Fiji and came to an end in Suva today.
