Labasa Airport to Close for Runway Upgrade

Labasa Airport in Vanua Levu will temporarily close from 16 February to 27 March 2026 for critical runway strengthening works, Fiji Airports has announced.

The upgrade, funded by the World Bank under the Na Vualiku Project, will reinforce sections of the runway to improve its Pavement Classification Rating (PCR), ensuring it can safely handle ATR 72 aircraft operations.

Fiji Airports CEO Mesake Nawari said the works are a key investment in aviation safety and infrastructure resilience for the Northern Division.

He said that the project does not involve extending the runway, but the closure is necessary to complete excavation, stabilisation, and drainage work safely.

Consultations have been held with airline partners, local businesses, and tourism stakeholders.

Fiji Airports is also coordinating alternative transport arrangements to minimise disruption during the closure.
