The legal fraternity in Fiji has been encouraged to work with the media.
And founder of Communications Fiji Ltd William Parkinson told delegates at the annual conference of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions that the two entities were powerful and needed more understanding of each other.
“My challenge to you is to work with us in rebuilding that sense of confidence. We need to step forward to fill that vacuum otherwise somebody’s going to fill it for us and it will be filled by all this garbage that’s coming on social media.”
Parkinson highlighted a well-regarded relationship initiative by the Fiji Police Force as a model for lawyers and prosecutors to emulate.
“I applaud the Fiji Police Force. One of the first things he did was to enter into conversation with the Fiji Media Association.”
“The fact that he is standing up at press conferences and is saying, if you see Police, a Police vehicle speeding report it, restores my faith in the system.”
“That is an example of a public servant stepping forward and filling tht space very effectively.”
Parkinson added that the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions should look into ways it can work with the Fijian Media Association.
