Flying Fijians Gear Up for Test Against France

Flying Fijians coach Mick Byrne has retained the same starting XV that lost 38-18 to England last week, with two changes on the bench, including potential debutant Tim Hoyt, ahead of their clash against France.

Kick-off at Stade Atalantique Metropole, Bordeaux, is scheduled for Sunday at 8:10 am (Fiji time).

Byrne described Hoyt as a “strong, young player” who has been monitored over recent years in England.

“He’s performed very well in the scrum… and covers the ground well,” Byrne said. “We need to start playing some of these players that we have an eye on for the future, and I’m confident he will perform well on the weekend.”

Hoyt takes Samuela Tawake’s place on the bench, and Kitione Salawa replaces Motikai Murray.

Byrne said the focus during this week’s training has been on recovery and mental resilience.

“The boys were frustrated, disappointed by the result on Saturday, so it was getting them up and going again was the key message. We’ve had great energy in training,” he added.

Despite France’s recent home loss to South Africa, Byrne anticipates a physical and fast-paced contest.

“They’ll be fired up… and that’s a challenge,” he said, adding that ball retention will be crucial: “Whoever can hang on to the ball will come out on top.”
