Fiji at COP29 a success; Commends stakeholders at the helm of climate change fight

Fiji’s participation at COP 29 in Azerbaijan in November last year will go a long way in securing efforts for the fight against the effects of climate change.

At a post-COP29 workshop, Environment Minister Mosese Bulitavu said several key issues were addressed and the delegation came away with wins for Fiji.

“It demonstrated the resilience, innovation, and leadership that define Fiji’s role in the global climate negotiations.”

“Firstly,serving as the G77 and China Adaptation Coordinator, ensuring that adaptation remained a priority for developing nations. secondly, leading as the PSIDS Coordinator for Loss and Damage, representing Pacific voices in critical discussions.”

“Co-facilitating finance negotiation items related to the Fund for responding to Loss and Damage, an essential mechanism for addressing the impacts of climate change.”

Bulitavu said Fiji’s appointments to several crucial councils added to the accomplishments.

“Securing a seat as a Board Member for the Fund for responding to Loss and Damage, positioning Fiji to influence decision-making at the highest level.Serving as the PSIDS Coordinator for Oceans, amplifying the importance of ocean-related issues in the climate agenda.”

“Securing Fiji’s role as co-chair of the Oceans and Climate Change Dialogue, a platform to highlight the inter-connectedness of ocean health and climate resilience.”

Bulitavu commended the hard work of people who have pushed Fiji’s agenda at the meetings, who worked to make sure the needs of not only Fiji but the Pacific is heard.

“These achievements reflect the hard work, collaboration, and unwavering commitment of all stakeholders involved and underscore Fiji’s leadership on the global stage as well as our ability to advocate for solutions that address the most pressing challenges of our time.”
