A Tsunami Watch has been issued for parts of Fiji following a major earthquake near Port Vila, Vanuatu, prompting warnings of potentially hazardous tsunami waves.
The earthquake struck with an intermediate depth source approximately 14 km northwest of Port Vila.
Fiji’s National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) has urged residents, particularly those in coastal areas of the Western Division, Yasawa and Mamanuca islands, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands, to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
Authorities have warned the public to avoid unnecessary travel to coastal areas until further notice.
“Based on available data provided by the Ministry of Mineral Resources Department, hazardous tsunami waves are forecasted,” the NDRMO said in a statement.
Residents have been advised to monitor official updates closely and remain prepared in case the situation escalates.
“Be prepared to take necessary precautions in case further warnings are issued,” the NDRMO said, encouraging people to avoid beaches and low-lying areas while the Tsunami Watch remains in effect.
Authorities say they will continue to monitor the situation and issue further advisories as more information becomes available.
