November 30, 2024

The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) joined key stakeholders including the Fijian Media Association in signing a Terms of Reference (ToR) aimed at countering disinformation in the electoral process.

Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa described the collaboration as a critical step to empower voters with accurate information and ensure transparency as Fiji approaches its next electoral cycle.

“This collaboration emphasizes a unified commitment to promoting accountability and trust within Fiji’s electoral framework. By bringing together stakeholders from the media, civil society, and government, we aim to develop a robust response to disinformation while fostering public confidence in the nation’s democratic systems,” the SoE added.

It focuses on four key areas: engaging civil society organisations, information and effective communication, capacity development coordination and online safety awareness and addressing disinformation.

The initiative also involves the Fiji Media Council, FemLink Pacific, Pacific Centre for Peacebuilding, Online Safety Commission, and the Electoral Commission of Fiji.

The TOR was signed this week at the FEO Headquarters in Toorak, Suva.
