Fiji Navy Investigates Reports of Ship Striking Reef Near Moala Island

November 27, 2024

The Fiji Navy is working to confirm reports that a Goundar Shipping vessel struck the Cakova Reef near Moala Island earlier this evening.

The incident surfaced after a man posted on Facebook claiming his brother was aboard the vessel. The post appealed for help for the passengers, stating that the ship had run aground on the reef.

A rep from Goundar Shipping told family members that they had made contact with the vessel’s captain, who reported that all passengers and crew were safe. The rep also said that a second vessel would be dispatched to retrieve those onboard.

While the exact vessel being deployed has not been identified, it is believed to be one originally scheduled for a Kadavu-bound trip this evening. In an update posted on social media, the company informed passengers travelling to Kadavu that the journey had been cancelled “due to an emergency.”

The rescue vessel is expected to depart tonight and reach the stranded ship by morning.

We will provide more details as they come to hand.
