Dangerous driving captured in viral social media videos

Fiji’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has suspended the licences of two individuals involved in reckless driving, following the circulation of videos on social media.

The videos, which show the drivers engaging in dangerous behaviour on the roads, were widely shared online and have sparked concerns about public safety.

The LTA took immediate action, summoning the individuals to showcause proceedings under Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. Their licences were subsequently suspended.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa has issued a strong warning to all drivers that reckless driving will not be tolerated and warned that penalties will be enforced under the law.

“Reckless driving for personal gratification or ‘fun’ is not only irresponsible but also an utter disgrace,” Rokosawa said in a statement.

“Engaging in behaviours that deliberately flout traffic regulations and compromise road safety is unacceptable.”

Rokosawa also encouraged the public to continue reporting such incidents but also urged caution when interacting with enforcement officers who he says are mandated to inspect vehicles suspected of being involved in offences.

Section 75(1) of the Land Transport Act 1998 also empowers officers to enter premises without a warrant if necessary to carry out inspections. Furthermore, section 75(5) of the same act outlines legal penalties for those found guilty of interfering with or obstructing an officer while performing their duties.

Rokosawa has called on all Fijians to work together to improve road safety.
