November 14, 2024

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has confirmed that corrections officers used “minimum force” during a routine search at Lautoka Correctional Institution last Thursday, following reports of an alleged assault on inmates.

According to an FCS statement, an investigation directed by the Commissioner of Corrections determined that the action meted out to five inmates who reportedly refused to comply during a routine check adhered to established procedures to maintain safety and order.

“The use of force was strictly in accordance with established procedures and aimed at maintaining safety and security within the facility,” the FCS said. “The five inmates involved were promptly medically examined following the incident. The medical reports confirm that there were no injuries sustained apart from minor scratches.”

The FCS reassured the public that inmate safety, dignity, and rights remain a top priority, and it confirmed that the officers involved would “be dealt with internally in accordance with FCS policies to ensure adherence to professional standards.”
