Fiji Great Council of Chiefs Reconvenes Tomorrow

November 12, 2024

The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) will meet over the next two days, starting tomorrow, at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.

GCC Chairman Viliame Seruvakula said that a key agenda item is updates from the provinces on efforts to economically empower resource owners and address community issues.

“These provincial updates are expected to provide valuable insights into the realities faced by our people and lay the groundwork for actionable, community-centered solution,” Seruvakula said.

“The Great Council of Chiefs looks forward to a productive and forward-looking meeting with the provincial leaders and remains hopeful that the insights and outcomes will inspire impactful changes in the lives of our people.”

The meeting will also review iTaukei legislation and administrative processes, aiming to strengthen legal protections for iTaukei resources and welfare

Delegates will also discuss the iTaukei Administration in confederacy-based working groups and hear from the newly formed Sub-Committees focused on Language and Culture, Law and Governance on the work done in efforts to preserve and progress iTaukei identity and collective well-being.

This is the GCC’s second meeting of the year, following its Feb-March session in Pacific Harbour.
