Ratu Naiqama Nominated as Fiji’s Next President After Ratu Wiliame Withdraws

October 23, 2024

Fiji is set to welcome a new president as Ratu Wiliame Katonivere withdrew his name from nomination, with Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the current Speaker of Parliament, endorsed as his successor.

In a statement issued last night, Rabuka confirmed that Ratu Wiliame had notified him two days ago that he no longer wished to be considered for a second term as president, following Rabuka’s initial request to re-nominate him under section 84(2) of Fiji’s Constitution.

Rabuka paid tribute to the outgoing president, acknowledging Ratu Wiliame’s service, particularly during Fiji’s post-2022 election transition.

“His Excellency has conducted his duties as Head of State with integrity and forbearance,” Rabuka stated.

He highlighted Ratu Wiliame’s commitment to the Constitution, even in challenging times, including post 2022 election “despite those who sought to sway his resolve in upholding the law.”

The Prime Minister also announced that a formal vakasenuqanuqa, or traditional farewell ceremony, will be held to honor Ratu Wiliame at the end of his term.

Ratu Naiqama’s nomination was endorsed by the People’s Alliance Parliamentary Caucus.

The formal nomination will be tabled in a special sitting of Parliament on October 31, where Ratu Naiqama is expected to garner widespread support.
