Inaugural Kadavu 7s Looks to Draw New Talent

October 16, 2024

For a rugby union that was only established in December 2023, the Kadavu Rugby Union is this week hosting its inaugural 7s tournament.

Known as the Fiji Bitter Kadavu 7s, the tournament, kickstarts the 7s series and has drawn 24 main teams, 12 Under 21’s and 4 women’s teams altogether for the games which begin on Thursday 17th October with finals to be held on Saturday 19th.

Minister for Women and Kadavu Rugby’s Honorable Lynda Tabuya said this was a huge achievement for her island home.

“Despite Kadavu’s challenging terrain and limited infrastructure, the Kadavu Rugby Union is committed to the development of grassroots rugby. Their achievements in organising the Vanua Cup and the Ranadi Cup for women,
where the Kadavu women’s team triumphed, have set the stage for the Fiji Bitter Kadavu 7s.”

“The tournament is expected to attract close to 550 players, including reigning Fiji Bitter
Sevens Series champions, the BLK Lavidi Brothers of Lavidi, Kadavu.”

Etrina Simpson, Head of Marketing for Fiji Bitter said the company was proud to be part of the growth and development of the sport on Kadavu by way of sponsorship.

“This is an exciting milestone for the Fiji Bitter Sevens Series, and we’re honoured to have
the Kadavu Rugby Union lead the way,” said Etrina Simpson, Head of Marketing for Fiji
Bitter.

“Fiji Bitter has been deeply committed to promoting rugby in Fiji for decades, and the
Kadavu 7s reflects our mission to support the development of grassroots rugby while
uplifting communities through sustainable initiatives. We’re thrilled to kick off the series in
such a meaningful way.”

Tournament coordinator James Vunituraga said the tournament was looking to be a tough yet exciting meeting of top teams in Fiji.

“These tournaments have always served as a platform where new talent is discovered so this is definitely a good start to the Fiji Bitter Sevens Series.”
