Fiji President Kicks Off 68th Hibiscus Festival

August 31, 2024

Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere opened the 68th Hibiscus Festival, marking its return after a five-year break.

In his address, Ratu Wiliame praised the ten Queen contestants, urging them to use their platform to advocate for the issues they care about.

“To the ten Queens – today, and for the next seven days – the stage is yours. I encourage you to take ownership of the platform that has existed since it premiered in 1956. Make your voice heard on the issues you are passionate about and deem significant to advocate on,” he said.

He also noted that this year’s festival will focus on celebrating Fijian cultural heritage.

“I am grateful that, as a nation, we have been obedient to globally established public health safety measures,” he added. This adherence allowed the festival’s safe return after its last occurrence in 2018.

Reflecting on the festival’s origins, Ratu Wiliame reminisced about its beginnings in the 1950s.

“Events such as this have underlying unifying factors, bringing people together to celebrate life, and creating a tangible sense of multi-cultural and multi-ethnic oneness,” he said.

He also praised past Hibiscus Queens, particularly the first Miss Hibiscus, Liebling Marlow, and highlighted how the festival has always served as a unifying event.

Ratu Wiliame also urged everyone to stay safe, especially parents looking after their children.

“I urge each one of you to be aware of your surroundings and heed the public safety messages from relevant agencies,” he said.

He wished the contestants well, encouraging them to cherish the experience and build new connections.

The official opening was preceded by a colourful and lively parade. The march began at the Suva Flea Market and wound its way through the streets of Suva to the Foreshore, where the festival will take place over the next seven days.
