Rotuma Airport Runway Upgrade Completed Ahead of Schedule

August 30, 2024

Fiji Airports has announced the completion of the runway pavement upgrade at Rotuma Airport, ahead of schedule.

The works, carried out by Flame Tree Development (Fiji) Pte Ltd, have significantly improved the safety features of the runway, according to Fiji Airports Chief Executive Officer, Mesake Nawari.

“The runway pavement maintenance work is essential in our operations, and we acknowledge the contractors for completing the maintenance ahead of time,” Nawari said.

He noted that despite the maintenance activities, “bi-weekly flight operations [were] unaffected at all.”

The Rotuma Airport project included landslip remediation, runway shoulder resealing, and fence upgrades. These improvements are part of a broader $10 million investment by Fiji Airports to maintain five of its outer island stations, including Labasa, Savusavu, Lakeba, and Matei (Taveuni).

“This is part of the ongoing maintenance works for all the outer island airports, reflecting the company’s commitment to maintaining government-owned outer island airports,” Nawari added.

He also stated that Fiji Airports will “continue its negotiations with the government for funding to further enhance facilities at outer island airports and Nausori.”

Rotuma Island Council Chairman, Gagaj Manav, expressed his appreciation, saying, “The Council and I are grateful for the work carried out on the island airport runway and to meet the team that [was] here to work on the airport runway.”

The council’s seven district chiefs were also given a tour of the upgraded runway, apron, and taxiway facilities.
