August 6, 2024

Fiji will take on the hosts, Tahiti, in one of the semifinals of the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship scheduled for Thursday.

The national side secured their semifinal spot after a 3-2 win over Vanuatu in their final Group A fixture to finish second in their pool. They will face the hosts for a place in the final.

Fiji led 2-1 at the breather after Sakaria Manipen struck first for Vanuatu in the 8th minute before Krishna Sami Jnr equalised in the 34th minute, and Rishal Shankar added another via a free kick just before the break.

Vanuatu’s Jefpta Taravaki levelled the scores early in the second half before Veleni Rasorewa headed in a Shankar cross for the winner in the 80th minute.

The win was Fiji’s second from three pool games, having won over Cook Islands 2-1 and conceding a 1-7 defeat to Group A leaders New Zealand.

Tahiti on the other hand qualified with a clean slate with wins over Solomon Islands 2-1, New Caledonia 2-1 and Samoa by the same scoreline.

New Caledonia will play New Zealand in the other semifinal.
