An investigation is underway following an accident at Gau Aerodrome involving a Northern Air Britten Norman Islander (BN2A) aircraft.
The incident, which occurred at 8.30 am today has prompted immediate emergency response measures and a thorough investigation.
The aircraft, carrying two crew members and three passengers, landed beyond the designated landing area and collided with a rock mound at the end of the runway. Despite the significant damage to the aircraft, all onboard were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka, issued a statement confirming the incident and added that the primary objective of the investigation is accident prevention.
“In accordance with Section 12 of the Civil Aviation (Occurrence Reporting and Investigation) Regulation 2009, I have identified an Aircraft Accident Investigator who will conduct a thorough investigation,” Gavoka said.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) also confirmed the incident, noting that emergency response procedures were activated immediately.
CAAF is collaborating with relevant authorities to secure the scene and ensure safety.
“An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident,” the CAAF statement read.
