Due to the recent hike and confiscation of illicit drugs in Fiji and especially in schools, there will be added security measures at this year’s Coca-Cola Games.
These will see patrons old and young alike being subjected to controlled searches by police and dogs from the Fiji Police Force’s K9 Unit.
Speaking to the media today, Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua said they were not taking any risks as young people are being subjected to drug peddling by criminals.
“Let me assure the public that we have added extra security for the Coca-Cola Games because we have been told and know that this is an event where these drug pushers will be targeting innocent children to sell to fellow students.”
“This is a huge event. We have to take the necessary measures to capture these people who I call evil because they don’t think of the welfare of our children they only care about their own selfish gain.”
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu echoed similar sentiments saying the Force was going to do stringent checks during the games.
“We are not taking any chances. The children of Fiji are vulnerable and given the magnitude of this particular sports event the Fiji Police Force will be carrying out necessary checks on those attending.”
The Games will take place at the HFC Bank Stadium on May 2-3.
