Mataqali Serau, an indigenous landowning unit in Dreketi, Vanua Levu, is embarking on the construction of a shopping complex.
Its venture into business ownership is facilitated through its holding company, Serau Holdings Ltd, and follows on the mataqali’s historic recognition as the top landowning unit (LOU) in the top 10 shareholders list of Fijian Holdings Ltd (FHL).
According to the iTaukei Land Trust Board, this accomplishment attained towards the end of last year, is historic as Mataqali Serau became the first LOU to secure this prominent position within FHL.
“We have faced challenges, but they have only strengthened our resolve to contribute meaningfully to our community’s economic development,” Turaga ni Mataqali Sikeli Waisega said noting that the construction of the complex will also generate employment opportunities in the district.
Mataqali Serau is in talks with local contractors and businesses regarding the project.
