Fiery Showdown Looms as Fiji Women Face Samoa in Final Group Match-Up

November 20, 2023

In what promises to be their most formidable matchup yet, the Fiji Women’s Basketball team is gearing up to face Samoa in their third and final pool game at the 17th Pacific Games.

The game, scheduled for 9am (10am FJT) at Friendship Hall in Honiara, Solomon Islands today, holds significant stakes for both teams.

Samoa, like Fiji, has maintained a clean record, securing victories in their first two games and commanding the top spot in Group A standings with a better points difference.

Team captain Letava Kenny, acknowledging the challenge ahead, highlighted the strengths of the Samoan team. Describing them as a young, talented, and athletic group, Kenny recognised the formidable height and strength of the Samoan players.

“We never underestimate Samoa. It will be a good match-up for us. It will be a good test for us,” remarked Kenny, underlining the team’s respect for their opponents.

A victory for Fiji in this encounter will secure automatic qualification for the semifinals on Friday. However, a defeat would mean navigating the qualifying finals on Wednesday to earn a spot in the semifinal round.

Fiji has showcased impressive form in the tournament so far, winning over the host Solomons 82-43 in their opening game before defeating Guam 55-40.

Kenny, who plies her trade in professional basketball in New Zealand, was the standout performer in the win against Guam with a +21 efficiency rating, contributing 19 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
