HIV Infections Up Almost 3 Folds Since 2010, With Males Making Up Majority of 2022 Cases

July 19, 2023

In Fiji, HIV infections have nearly tripled over a span of 12 years, with the latest data from 2022 revealing a majority of new infections occurring among males.

According to the Ministry of Health, HIV infections in the country have increased by 260% since 2010, making it the second-fastest in the Asia Pacific region, with males accounting for 61%, females 36%, and transgender individuals 3% of the 245 new infections.

Of these new cases, adults comprised 94% and children 6% of the infections. The Central/Eastern division had the highest number of cases at 55%, followed by the Western division at 38%.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, the Ministry of Health has launched a series of strategies aimed at curbing the transmission of the virus and providing assistance to those affected. Strengthening HIV testing, particularly among males, has become a priority. The rollout of Point of Care (PoC) testing at Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) clinics is also being implemented to improve access to testing services.

The ministry also highlighted the need for a collaborative approach involving families, communities, organisations, and development partners. Individuals are encouraged to practice safe sex and get tested.

Fiji aims to achieve the Global AIDS Targets and end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
