FijiFirst leader Voreqe Bainimarama has resigned from Parliament, declaring that his 3-year suspension was unwarranted and unjustified.
The former Leader of the Opposition said it was important to keep the Opposition numbers to 26, as his suspension would reduce their numbers to 25 over three years.
The former PM also maintains he will continue to be the leader of FijiFirst and announced that Inia Seruiratu will be the new Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
Bainimarama adds he and party general secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum will guide the MPs to fight inside Parliament while they engage actively outside Parliament with their FijiFirst supporters and other ‘dissatisfied voters’.
“You will be seeing more of me on the ground,” he said in his video statement.
It is expected that Sachida Nand, who was the next highest-polling FijiFirst candidate in the 2022 General Election, will replace Bainimarama.
Bainimarama is the fourth FijiFirst MP to resign from Parliament after Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Mahendra Reddy, and Rosy Akbar.
Alipate Nagata replaced Sayed-Khaiyum, Penioni Ravunawa was sworn in place of Reddy and Virendra Lal replaced Akbar.
