Labasa Women FC’s hopes of clinching the inaugural OFC Women’s Champions League title have suffered a setback as they dropped to fourth place in the standings following their second consecutive defeat in the competition.
The reigning domestic women’s football champions were dealt a 4-1 blow by New Caledonian side AS Academy Féminine in their latest match yesterday, having previously conceded a narrow 1-0 loss to Koloale FC last weekend. With just one win from three games, Labasa now finds themselves trailing behind AS Academy Féminine, Koloale, and Hekari United.
Despite Labasa’s best efforts, which included goal-scoring opportunities from Sofi Diyalowai and Shanyal Sindhika, they were unable to match the speed and skill displayed by the AS Academy Féminine forwards, particularly the formidable presence of Alice Wenessia in midfield. Labasa managed to find the back of the net once, with Unaisi Tuberi scoring their lone goal in the 75th minute.
The outcome of the match means that Coralie Bretegnier’s side will now need to secure victories against Kiwi FC on Thursday and Koloale FC on Saturday to secure the coveted OFC Women’s Champions League title. Meanwhile, Labasa will be aiming to secure their second win of the competition when they face off against Hekari United in their final fixture on Saturday.
