Heavy rain to ease Saturday, and resume Sunday

January 5, 2023

Heavy rain experienced across the country is expected to ease early Saturday morning, but showers are expected still for parts of the group again from Sunday, the Fiji Weather Office says.

The conditions stem from the combined effect of a trough of low pressure that remains slow-moving just to the west of Viti Levu together with the moist northwesterly wind flow that prevails over Fiji.

“On Saturday, heavy rain is expected to ease with some sunny breaks. On Sunday, due to another trough of low pressure that is anticipated to approach Fiji from  the southwest, showers with isolated heavy falls will start to affect most parts of the group  again until early next week.”

Continuous rain also means saturated soil and as such the risk of flash floods and landslides as well.

Hence, the following warnings remain current;

A Heavy Rain Warning remains in force for Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, Interior and Western Parts of Viti Levu (Greater Korolevu-Sigatoka-Nadi-Lautoka-Ba-Tavua-Rakiraki  Area), Vatulele, Kadavu and Southern Lau Group.

A Flash Flood Warning is now in force for low-lying areas, crossings, and flood-prone areas within Tuva Catchment from Emuri to Semo Village, Nadi Catchment and Vitogo Catchment.

A Flash Flood Alert remains in force for the rest of the low-lying areas and flood-prone areas in the Interior and Western Parts of Viti Levu from Sigatoka to Rakiraki (Sigatoka-Lautoka Ba-Tavua-Rakiraki Area) and Kadavu.

Meanwhile, a tropical low is expected to deepen during the weekend in the coral sea and move southeast towards New Caledonia. The system is not anticipated to have any direct effect on Fiji.
