It will not stop us: Rabuka on complaints against People’s Alliance

October 5, 2022

People’s Alliance party leader and former Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka was called up to the FICAC office this morning, but appeared unfazed, telling media personnel that it “will never stop our march to election victory.”

He said he was not aware of the reasons for his being called into FICAC, but described it as “an assault on [the party] and democracy on the eve of the general election.”

However, his call-up is believed to be linked to complaints that have been made against the party, including that by the governing FijiFirst administration for probable breach of the electoral laws.

“The people are with us. You are guaranteeing our success,” Mr. Rabuka said, pointedly referring to FijiFirst General Secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who is understood to be the respondent in TPA’s latest complaint that was filed with the Fijian Elections Office this week.

“Let me tell Mr. Khaiyum, that through his actions, he is digging his own political grave and that of his political party.”

Mr. Rabuka further insists that the complaints and efforts to sway TPA’s campaign were driven by the governing party’s fear of losing the election, something that Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum strongly denies.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum told MaiTV earlier that FijiFirst’s decision to lodge a complaint against TPA and other parties’ is not borne out of insecurity about their performance or how they would fair come the 2022 General Elections, maintaining that the FijiFirst Government would form government post-election.

“People who offer inducements, people who offer false promises, they are the ones who are fearful of losing. They know they don’t have good policies so they have to offer something extra.

“Win, lose fair and square, that is what we want.”
