$17 million-plus since 2018

Fiji’s Accident Compensation Commission has paid out more than $17 million in compensation to victims of accidents since January 2018.

Motor vehicle accidents accounted for more than 80 per cent of payments, followed by employment-related accidents and accidents occurring in schools constitute the smallest at less than one per cent.

The commission said it paid $17.3 million to date – of which $14,379,000 were made out for motor vehicle accidents, almost $3 million for accidents in work places and school accidents, $147,000.

Some of these payments, ACCF said would not have been possible under the previous legal framework.

ACCF Chief Executive Parvez Akbar said under the previous framework, close to 80 per cent of families who lost loved ones from motor vehicle and employment accidents would have missed out on compensation payments.
